A Writing Contest

I am about to enter 200 words of a middle grade novel (a novel written for 8-12 year olds.) for a Writer’s Digest contest.  I wrote this story, “Mystery at Marston” some years ago and put it aside for a while.  I recently re-read the outline, and liked it–wish I’d done more with it, but several rejections kind of disillusioned me.  However, I am grasping this oppportunity to see it it has potential.  The contest is  through Writer’s digest, it’s called the “Dear Lucky Agent” contest, and is on the GLA blog:  www.writersdigest.com/editor-blogs/guide-to-literary-agents-11th-free-lucky-agent-contest-middle-grade-fiction

A long link, isn’t it?  The deadline is end of the day on Monday (27 August.)  Wish me luck, y’all.  The story is a Nancy Drew type of mystery–the kind I love.

More Pet Peeves

One more PP, one of many things I find aggravating:  Restaurant wait-staff who stop by one’s table while one is eating to ask “Is everything okay?”   “How does it taste?” or “Can I get you anything?”   They usually ask that when one is mid-chew.  I think a much better idea (restaurant owners/managers take note–please) would be to do like one Mexican restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona,  did–have a little flag on each table that can be raised to attract a waitperson when something is needed or to make a comment.

Okay, that’s today’s gripe.

East Texas got some needed rain  yesterday, my rain guage showed almost one inch.  And today is a leeeetle cooler, only 86F, with more storms forecast.

A freind has just sent me photographs he took at the London Olympics–he was one of the volunteers, a “meeter and greeter”.  Some of the pictures were of the departure area at Heathrow Airport, a special area set  up just to  handle the thousands of athletes leaving for their homes.  Very emotional.  there is a “Memory Tree”–the branches holding notes of farewell and thanks from the athletes.  I’m told the notes will be made into a memorial book.

I was hoping the BBC would produce a DVD of both the opeining and closinhg ceremonies.  My cousin said he thought they were going to and he planned gto send it to me for Christmas, however upon checking he found out the BBC is only going to produce one showing highlights of both the games and the ceremonies, not the full ceremonies.

Now I’m going to see if I can add yet another page to this blog–one that covers my writing (works-in-progress, for instance) and possibly one more page with pictures of the greeting cardst I design.

Trying new things

It’s late and I’m kind of sleepy, so I don’t know how this will work. I’m writing this using my MS Word program. This will be brief. I’m even going to try to include a picture!

This is a card I designed–more about this when I make a third page. All for now, good night and God Bless.
